Are you guys fans of tuna? I used to be obsessed with tuna fish sandwiches in elementary school, until someone made fun of my smelly lunch. I was pretty sensitive as a kid, so after that I only ever ate tuna sandwiches at home. But, it wasn’t really too much of a problem, because tuna sandwiches are really so much better as tuna melts! Who doesn’t love tuna and melty cheese on toasted bread?
To be honest, the first time I ever heard about tuna melts was on Full House – please tell me you’ve watched at least one episode? Tuna melts were Danny’s happy meal and after I figured out what a tuna melt was, they were essentially mine too. Here I updated them a little bit by popping everything on a savory cheddar and scallion waffle. Clearly, I’m obsessed with cheddar and scallions, they just work so well together. They’re perfect inside a fluffy and crisp waffle. Especially when you top them with tuna salad and extra cheese and scallions.
For me, a tuna melt is one of those retro dishes that brings back a bit of nostalgia. They remind me of late night diners, endless cups of coffee, long conversations, and good friends. I hardly ever go to diners anymore (I should though!), but if I saw this on a brunch menu, I’d order it in a heartbeat.

Savory Scallion and Cheddar Waffles Recipe
makes 18 mini waffles, 9 small waffles, or 4 large waffles
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar
- 1/4 cup sliced green onions
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 large egg
Preheat your waffle iron.
In a bowl, mix together the dry ingredients and the shredded cheddar. In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, milk and eggs. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, stirring until just combined. Stir in the green onions.
Grease your waffle iron if needed and cook waffles according to waffle iron instructions or until the waffles are golden brown and crispy. Enjoy as is, or use in tuna melt waffle recipe.
Tuna Melt Waffles Recipe
makes 1, scale as needed
- 1 savory scallion and cheddar waffle
- 1-2 tablespoons tuna salad
- shredded cheddar
- sliced green onions
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Top waffles with a bit tuna salad and a generous amount of shredded cheddar. Bake in the oven until the cheese is bubbly and melted. Top with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired and enjoy hot.
